AT&T Service This AT&T phone can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T's 3G mobile broadband data network, which is available in most major metropolitan areas. Slow, bulky, just overall BADFeb 09, 2010 I actually returned this phone to Amazon after less than a week. I absolutely hated it. It was incredibly slow and the touch screen was god awful. I used an iPhone from the time they came out until I ordered this, and I went straight back after returning this hunk of junk. I tried everything on every forum that supposedly increases the performance of this hog, but it didn't do much. Just plain BAD. Do yourself a favor and stick with either iPhone or a Blackberry.

Great For The Tinkerer, But How Long Until You Want A Phone That Just Works?Nov 09, 2009 Reviewing this phone is very difficult for me. It's hard to separate how I feel about Windows Mobile versus how I feel about the great job HTC has done with the device itself. I'm going to try to keep my thoughts on those matters separate, but it is a Windows Mobile device, after all.
When I first got this phone last year on 26 December, I was in love with it. This phone can just about do anything that you can imagine. 3G, including HSDPA and HSUPA, check. Wifi, check. Microsoft Exchange, contacts, 3rd party applications, all check, check, check. I was, and still am, amazed that so much functionality could be packed into one device.
The TouchFLO UI that HTC has built on top of Windows Mobile is outstanding and makes using the phone a treat. It's so great that you'll actually groan a little whenever you have to dig down into the Windows Mobile UI to change settings. HTC just cannot be commended enough on how much they've increased the usability of the phone. If this were simply a Windows Mobile device with no TouchFLO, I would have been very unhappy with it.
After a month or so of owning the device, I started to realize its flaws. The touch-sensitive screen will accidentally make and answer calls for you (butt calls anyone?). The phone was becoming incredibly sluggish. Programs would open slowly and become unresponsive, typing would lag far behind my actual keystrokes, etc, etc. We all know that Windows Mobile is slow and not so optimal.
However, I'm a programmer and love to tinker. I had read in all my research about different places on the web to get custom ROMs and applications for the phones to make it run faster. If you don't know what a ROM is, then just skip to the next paragraph. See, many reviewers had said that the Fuze can be made much better, faster, and more iPhone-like by installing "custom-baked ROMs". This is completely true. I spent a joyous month downloading and installing new ROMs on my Fuze, finding exactly the one that offered the best performance/featurest balance. The unfortunate downside of that is that most custom ROMs are unstable. I eventually settled with HTC's official ROM (*not* the official AT&T ROM that comes installed on the phone, which is slow). HTC's official ROM is fast, stable, and works great! Again they have done an amazing job with this device!
I had fallen back in love with my new, improved, speedy and responsive Fuze! But sadly, it was not meant to last. While I love to tinker, love to figure out how things work, love to squeeze that last bit of performance out of something, after a year of ownership, I just want a phone that plain works. I want to be able to check email, read text messages, surf the web, connect to Wifi, all that, but I don't want to have to manually tweak settings to make it do so in an acceptable manner. That's the ultimate crutch of this phone: It's built on Windows Mobile, which has fallen far behind Apple and Google in creating OSes for mobile devices. Windows Mobile is so slow and sluggish that you have to do quite a bit of manual tweaking to this phone to make it run in tip-top shape.
All that tinkering and tweaking was fun for a while. I'm a little older now, with a little less patience and a little less free time, and I just want a phone that works, period. No registry tweaking, no having to download .CAB hacks, just, pow, here's my phone, it works, I haven't had to restart it in three weeks.
The HTC Fuze was a great phone for the year that I've had it. It can do just about everything under the sun. With lots of research and tweaking, you can make this phone run well and be wonderfully responsive, or at least as responsive as Windows Mobile will allow. One day, though, you may become like me, and want something that just plain works well out of the box, no tweaking required.
overall awesome phoneSep 17, 2009 I'm not gonna list exact details of it's capabilities cuz they have numerous other reviews of that nature. But i will say this, the battery can be your friend or it will be like Ms. Karma and play your [...]. You need a charger and a mini generator at the ready at all times, for if you surf non-stop on the internet and love Twitter; either purchase a second battery or make sure you have a charger and you are near an outlet. I'm not saying get a better phone based on the battery *cuz all smartphones phones drain quickly when on the net*. Also it kept freezing every other 2 or 3 hours and I had to restart all the time, if anyone gets this please phone download its updates and trust me things would be a lot smoother *except battery*.

Feature-Rich, Tweakable Smartphone, With Some Multimedia DrawbacksSep 16, 2009 Much of what the Fuze is capable of/not capable of has already been written in previous reviews, so I'll just pass along my observations after owning the Fuze for just over a month now:
Pros:
Beautiful screen and resolution. Web pages and games look amazing.
Slide-out keyboard is arguably the best in the smartphone market. A joy to use, especially if you can't stand to type with your fingers on a touchscreen.
Combination touch screen, scroll wheel, directional pad, keyboard, and stylus covers every navigation base imaginable.
TouchFlo is very cool once you get the hang of it. You can do everything with one thumb.
Scroll wheel is great for enlarging Opera-browser web pages, and directional pad makes browsing menus simple if you don't want to use the touchscreen.
Bluetooth support is fantastic. I'm using two stereo Bluetooth headsets (Sony and Motorola.)
Call quality is excellent, phone interface is simple to use.
Upgradable Micro SD slot. I have a 16gb card in the Fuze now, and it will handle up to 32gb.
Mobile Windows Media Player integrates nicely with my laptop and PC, so I can create playlists and drag them to the Fuze. I'm also a subscriber to Napster, and the Fuze works perfectly with my "all you can eat" subscription.
Hundreds of modifications, 3rd party programs, and tweaks are available for the Fuze, so you're never "stuck" with an out-of-the-box phone. You can upgrade and customize forever. Type "HTC Fuze" into a search engine, and you'll see what I mean.
If you're a business traveler (like me) Windows Mobile integration with Microsoft Office is a must, and the slide-out keyboard makes it easy to work on documents in the airport, etc., without having to open my laptop.
Cons:
Video playback is atrocious. Even though the screen has a resolution of 480 x 640, it will really only play 320 x 240 video without any lag or stutter. Forget Amazon Unbox or any other video that doesn't need to be converted first.
No 3.5mm headphone jack. Seriously, who at HTC decided this wasn't a crucial feature? You can plug in a wired headphone through a charger/headphone jack cord that is incredibly inconvenient. Luckily, there are some excellent Bluetooth stereo headsets available to offset this.
Equalizer only works when a wired headset is plugged in. Perhaps this will be fixed for Bluetooth in a future Fuze update.
Weak battery life. Less than a day's juice with full use, especially if you're using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I had a Blackberry Curve before the Fuze, and it could go more than a day without a charge.
A bit thick, especially with a protective case. Not as wide as an iPhone though, and still fits in my pocket.
Camera could be better (it's 3.2 megapixels.) Video recording is simply OK as well. However, if you're serious about photography, your phone shouldn't be your primary device.
Overall:
I would suggest loading Kinoma Play software on the Fuze for streaming audio and other multimedia features. I use that more than anything else when it comes to Shoutcast and RSS podcasts right now. It fills in the multimedia cracks nicely.
If video is a "must have" feature on your phone, then don't think twice about buying an iPhone. If a high-quality camera is a "must have" feature, then check out the latest Sony phones.
For everything else though, especially the keyboard, I'd recommend the Fuze in a heartbeat, and with Windows Mobile 6.5 (and 7 too?) on the way, it should really maximize the Fuze's potential. I plan to keep this phone for a long time.
